This weekend marked the largest full moon that we will see for 20 years. Quite an event – and one which drew countless shutterbugs out to capture it. William Morton headed out to San Diego’s Shelter Island, looking for the perfect vantage point to capture that massive moon hovering over the San Diego skyline. Lined up alongside well over a dozen other photo enthusiasts (just on this stretch of this island), William set out his big tripod and weighted it down for additional stability. The 80-200mm f/2.8 lens was selected and mounted to the formidable Nikon D3. The camera framed in the San Diego skyline overlooking the harbor and the composition was set. An initial series of images was captured to ensure everything was set and working properly, yielding the beautiful image above.
Unfortunately, the clouds also came to enjoy the show, and they had a better seat. An hour and a half later it became painfully obvious that we would not see anything other than a lighter area of clouds, illuminated by the massive moon which could not break through. Oh well, let’s calendar this again in 2031… Until then, see the full-size San Diego skyline image here.
